Living in France, business in the UK

Hi
We are really wanting to move to France permanently, but are being put off by stories of horrendous costs to start up or register a business here.
I have a small business in the UK. I author, publish and sell technical handbooks.
All of my customers are in the UK and all of my income would be made in the UK.
I would like to live an France, would be happy to pay French deductions on my income and benefit from things such as the excellent French health system.
So
Is it better to keep the business registered in UK, pay UK tax and then transfer money to France as needed. Would I be able to get health benefits or would I have to purchase private health insurance.
Or
Do I register the business in France, pay my dues to my country of residence and get the benefits that accrue.

Has anyone any experience of this or could you point me in the direction of an English speaking financial adviser who would be likely to have knowledge in this area.
I wouldn't expect to be advised for free, but initially all contact would be by email.

Thanks
Dave

You are unlikely to get a choice in this matter. If you are resident in France and work in France you have to register your business in France and pay tax and social security charges in France, regardless of the source of your income. It is both more complicated and more expensive to be self employed in France than in Britain, but if you set things up correctly it should not be impracticably so.

For specialist advice, you could try Joanna Reintjes http://www.persotax.co.uk/

I have to take issue with what Muridak says.

If you are resident in France, you have to register (for tax and social security purposes) all your self employed earnings, where ever in the world that income arises.

If however, you were employed outside France, then you could pay tax and social security in the country of origin, declaring the income earned and the tax therefore deducted on your declaration de revenue each year.

You do need to take professional advice on this matter though and not just the advice of people on this forum. Penalties for non declaration are high in France.

As an author in france you come under a very special tax regime which I understand has many advantages over other professions (I think that you pay alot less).
For your legal status you would not be allowed into the Auto-Entrepreneur system but would need to register as an Entreprise Individuelle.

I don't know how pubishing (is that printing?) and selling fit into the special status.

This official site will give a good starting point for gaining more information:
